It’s time to celebrate the holiday! National Bourbon Day is just around the corner, so it’s time to sit back with your favorite bourbon cocktail and enjoy. Invite your friends — and maybe even your enemies — as we guide you through the bourbon-filled festivities.
History of Bourbon
Bourbon, the famous American whiskey, was first created in Kentucky, where local Scottish and Scot-Irish immigrants began distilling their own whiskey. The invention of bourbon is generally credited to Elijah Craig, a Baptist minister. He was the first to distill whiskey and allow it to age in the charred oak casks that give bourbon its distinct color and oaky flavors. Although, in Bourbon County, across the county line from Craig’s distillery, another man was credited with first using the term “bourbon whiskey.”
In light of these events, bourbon soon populated the region, with many distilleries opening up. Thus, Bourbon County became the bourbon capital of the world. This legacy continued until Prohibition, when whiskey making was banned in the county. Even after the repeal of Prohibition, no new distilleries opened up in Bourbon County until 2014. However, the whiskey had already touched the hearts and palettes of many, with American bourbon soon becoming a classic drink enjoyed at everything from neighborhood get-togethers to fancy state functions.
June 14th Is National Bourbon Day!

What follows are our recommendations for both groups of people to enjoy National Bourbon Day to the fullest. These cocktails are relatively simple to make, so you can prepare them at home. However, since you don’t want to deal with the trouble of buying the potentially substandard ingredients at different stores, then having to get the accouterments, and figuring it all out, simply buy a premade cocktail kit from Sourced Craft Cocktails. Featuring the required ingredients, a jigger, and simple instructions, a cocktail kit from Sourced will have you enjoying your drinks in no time, all available at their convenient website. Here are a few of our favorites.
Pineapple Old Fashioned
Made with bourbon, barrel-aged bitters, and pineapple syrup, the Pineapple Old Fashioned is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. This drink has notes of sweet, tart, and bitter flavors. The sweetness of the pineapple cuts through the bitterness of the whiskey to create a charming flavor profile. A change from the classic Old Fashioned, this drink is perfect for experienced whiskey drinkers that have yet to try this pineapple-infused twist.
Cherry Bourbon Smash
Crafted with tart cherry juice, lemon juice, mint syrup, and bourbon, this cocktail is a perfect introduction to more complex bourbon cocktails. The flavors of the lemon and cherries in the Cherry Bourbon Smash uplift the smokey flavor of the bourbon, and they add a nice dash of sweetness to cut through the flavor profile. Be sure to try this one on National Bourbon Day
Black Cherry Old Fashioned
Made with demerara syrup, tart cherry juice, orange bitters, walnut bitters, and burlesque bitters, the Black Cherry Old Fashioned is a complex cocktail that elegantly enhances the flavor of your bourbon. The tart cherry mixes with the warmth and smokiness of the whiskey and dampens the bitterness of the bitters. The slight citrus from the orange bitters completes the flavor profile.
Whiskey Mule
Designed with lime juice, simple syrup, ginger beer, and of course, bourbon, this classic cocktail is sure to leave you thirsty for more. The sweet overtones of the ginger beer and simple syrup in the Whiskey Mule serve to elevate the bitterness and oakiness of the bourbon. This classic recipe is available from Sourced Craft Cocktails.
Classic Manhattan
Made with sweet vermouth and angostura bitters, this delicious bourbon drink is a classic for a reason. The bitters are evenly balanced out by the sweetness of the vermouth, guaranteeing that the flavor will not be overwhelming. Combined with the smoothness of the bourbon, this delicious Classic Manhattan cocktail tastes refined and complex.
Best Mixers for Bourbon
There are a variety of drinks and mixers that go well with bourbon. A common mixer is ginger beer, as is used in a Whiskey Mule. Another one is angostura bitters, which bring out a unique flavor profile in bourbon and is an ingredient of old fashioneds. Also, sweet vermouth, as in a Manhattan, is an enjoyable accompaniment to bourbon. Finally, there are a variety of citrus and other fruit juices that go well with bourbon, adding a bit of sweetness or tang to the whiskey.
The Best Way to Drink Bourbon
The best way to drink bourbon is the same as with many spirits. You should take the glass, smell it in passing to absorb all the aromas, and then take a sip. You should let the sip sit in your mouth for a few seconds, generally until the burning sensation is gone, and let it coat your tongue. Then you might want to aspirate some air to more fully explore the flavor. Adding a little bit of ice might help express flavors, but don’t overdo it.
