Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday that commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The holiday is celebrated mainly in Mexico, but has also been gaining in popularity in the United States over the past few years. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated with parties, parades, festivals, and of course, plenty of food and drink.
One of the main reasons Cinco de Mayo has been gaining in popularity in the United States is because it is seen as a celebration of Mexican culture. Cinco de Mayo is a time when people can come together to celebrate all things Mexican, from food and music to art and dance. And of course, no Mexican celebration would be complete without some delicious drinks.
No Cinco de Mayo celebration would be complete without a margarita. Margaritas are a classic Mexican cocktail, and there are endless ways to make them. You can keep it simple with just tequila, lime juice, and Triple Sec, or get creative and add in some fruit juices or other liqueurs. If you’re feeling really adventurous, you can even rim your margarita glass with chili powder or salt!
In the United States, Cinco de Mayo comes at a perfect time of year as spring gives way to summer and patio lunches and outdoor margaritas become the norm. Take a look below to get some inspiration on how to prepare your own cocktails for this celebration of Mexican history.
